Woolworths investigates shipment of counterfeit canned sardines seized at a factory in Meyerton

MEYERTON - Woolworths has distanced itself from the shipment of counterfeit canned sardines discovered during a raid at a factory in Meyerton and has launched an investigation. Last week, the SAPS arrested seven undocumented migrants during a raid at a factory in Meyerton. Authorities seized a large quantity of counterfeit Lucky Star pilchards and printing equipment used to alter expiration dates. The Oceana Group, owners of the Lucky Star brand, confirmed after an investigation that the counterfeit pilchards are not their product. The counterfeit products were found in Woolworths-branded cartons. The retailer suspects that the canned sardines may be part of an imported shipment rejected by Woolworths for failing to meet their stringent quality control standards. Suppliers are required to dispose of rejected stock responsibly, and Woolworths is investigating why the necessary protocols were not followed. The matter remains under investigation as South Africa grapples with a food safety crisis. Since September, 890 cases of foodborne illnesses have been reported nationwide, with 23 fatalities.
