SEDIBENG - The Sedibeng District Municipality council is set to elect a new mayor today following the recent removal of the ANC Mayor Lerato Maloka through a motion of no confidence. The ANC has nominated Maloka for re-election, while the opposition is backing Cllr Mokhele from the ACDP. With the district governed by a coalition, the outcome of the vote will be crucial in determining Sedibeng’s leadership. Maloka’s tenure has been marred by allegations of mismanagement. Reports suggest she failed to meet her obligations to the municipality, its employees, and the community. Despite ongoing financial struggles affecting payroll, she allegedly approved over R550,000 for a trip to Germany. Additionally, she refused to use an official Mercedes Benz GLB for a year, only for it to be found with mechanical damage caused by sugar in the engine. The election result will shape the district’s political future.
