VAAL TRIANGLE - A survey by SweepSouth reveals a dire financial situation, with numerous South African domestic workers losing their jobs. The sixth annual survey highlights job losses in the sector have increased by 15% due to emigration, with nearly 60% of employers moving away. The findings indicate domestic workers spend more than their earnings, resulting in significant debts. The formalisation of domestic work rights has added to employers’ burdens, leading to service cuts. The report calls for urgent consideration of universal unemployment benefits, as many workers lack Unemployment Insurance Fund protection.
