Sharpeville father sentenced for attempted murder of toddler in poisoning incident

SHARPEVILLE - A man from Sharpeville, Vaal Triangle, has been sentenced to four years of direct imprisonment for attempting to poison his two-year-old son. The incident occurred on May 5, 2024, when an argument between the child’s mother and the accused, escalated. The accused forced rat poison into the child’s mouth, locked the mother in, and fled. The child survived due to prompt medical care. The Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court found the accused guilty of attempted murder. Sharpeville SAPS Station Commander, Colonel Selota, praised Sergeant Morapedi Mutlaneng’s meticulous investigation, highlighting it as a testament to the SAPS’ commitment to justice. Community members applaud this victory as a warning that crimes against children will not be tolerated.
