VEREENIGING - Officers from the Sebokeng SAPS saved three men held hostage during a truck hijacking near the Sonlandpark entrance on Waterdal Road, during a patrol on Thursday, 22 August. Police spokesperson Sergeant Nthabiseng Mokhachane reported that the victims were ambushed by six armed men on Grootvlei Road. According to Mokhachane, the hijackers forced the truck, carrying two additional trucks and five vehicles, to stop by flashing their headlights. When a passenger stepped out to investigate, he was met by the armed suspects, who quickly escalated the situation by firing a shot at the driver’s window and ordering him to open the door. The hijackers then took control of the truck, driving it to an undisclosed location where they demanded the vehicles be transferred to another truck. However, as Sebokeng SAPS officers approached, the hijackers abandoned one of the stolen trucks and fled on foot, while others managed to escape with a truck still loaded with a vehicle. Sedibeng cluster police commissioner Major General Nkhensani Lemba commended the officers' bravery and vigilance, which prevented a potentially deadly situation.
