SHARPEVILLE - Authorities in Sharpeville have shut down five spaza shops for failing to meet environmental health standards. The operation, conducted on 18 March, targeted illicit goods and non-compliant businesses. Law enforcement officers from 14 police stations collaborated with Emfuleni By-Laws, the Emfuleni Department of Health, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, and Community Policing Forum patrollers. Their focus was to ensure that businesses adhered to environmental health regulations and possessed valid certificates of acceptability. Sharpeville police spokesperson, Constable Busisiwe Sango, confirmed that 13 spaza shops were inspected, with five forced to close due to non-compliance. Authorities have vowed to continue these operations to uphold public health and safety. Shop owners are urged to comply with environmental health regulations to avoid further action. Officials warn that future inspections will be conducted to ensure businesses meet the required standards.
