Family found safe after being kidnapped from their Zamdela home

SASOLBURG - The Sasolburg SAPS says two suspects have been arrested after they allegedly kidnapped a family in Amelia in the Zamdela area. The police say the 63-year-old victim alleged that on Monday, 14 October 2024 at about 23:00, he and his family were sleeping when he heard the main door being broken into. When he got up, he came across four unknown males carrying firearms standing in his bedroom, demanding money. The suspects took the victim, his 55-year-old wife, and their three children, aged 38, 33 and 26, to the living room and took all of their cellphones. They demanded the banking app pin and stole a substantial amount of money from their accounts. The suspects then tied the victims’ hands and covered their heads with pillowcases and drove with them to an RDP house in Orange Farm. Zamdela police spokesperson, Captain Loraine Earle, said the police received a complaint of child neglect, but on arrival, they established there was a possible house robbery and kidnapping. Various Task Teams swiftly responded to information, which led them to the family vehicle abandoned at Drieziek, Orange Farm. Earle said the members continued to the RDP house where the family was held hostage for the night and managed to apprehend two suspects, aged 26 and 58. They will appear before the Sasolburg Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of house robbery and kidnapping. Investigation still continues and more arrests are expected.
