VAAL TRIANGLE - The Gauteng government has revealed that councillors in the Emfuleni Local Municipality are among the culprits that are not paying their balances for rates and services, which includes the mayor. The Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Jacob Mamabolo, on Tuesday told the Gauteng legislature that the mayor owes R5 000, the speaker R4 000, and the chief whip of council R1 490, while members of the mayoral committee collectively owe about R125 670. This amounts to R136 976. Mamabolo was responding to questions posed to him orally in the legislature. News24 reports that in total, Emfuleni municipality employees owe more than R4.4 million, while councillors owe R1.7 million. According to the Municipal Structures Act, councillors and municipal workers are not allowed to owe the municipality for rates and services for more than three months.
