SEDIBENG - The DA has expressed deep concern over the re-election of ANC councilor Lerato Maloka as Sedibeng District Municipality’s mayor, warning that mismanagement in the municipality will continue. Maloka was reinstated on Tuesday, 18 February, during a special council sitting, just weeks after being ousted via a DA-sponsored motion of no confidence. She narrowly defeated DA candidate Prudence Hlanyane with only one vote. The DA and the EFF have criticized the decision, citing service delivery failures, financial mismanagement, and the municipality’s growing crisis. They argue that the ANC has prioritized political control over residents’ needs. Meanwhile, the Sedibeng District Municipality's mayoral chain remains missing. The chain, valued at approximately R465,000, disappeared after the State of the District Address on June 23, 2023, and was reported to the police only five months later. Investigations into its disappearance are ongoing.
