ActionSA calls for urgent reforms of SA’s industrial policies amid ArcelorMittal closures

VAAL TRIANGLE - ActionSA is calling for a comprehensive review and overhaul of South Africa’s industrial policies to ensure they are evidence-based and capable of addressing the country’s economic challenges. This comes following the announcement of the closure of ArcelorMittal’s operations in Newcastle and Vereeniging, which could result in the loss of 3,500 jobs. ActionSA’s, Alan Beesley, says ArcelorMittal’s decision is a stark reminder of the deep-rooted flaws in South Africa’s industrial and economic policies.

The Save South Africa Civic Movement is meanwhile calling on government to prioritise the working class and save jobs. The movement’s Gauteng chairperson, Lerato Moshesh, says the promise of job creation and business support is hard to believe from the government of national unity when all they see is retrenchments and downscaling of businesses.
